TEAM CYCLOSPORE

TEAM CYCLOSPORE: A group of roadies living around the northern part of our sunny island who got to know each other through togoparts and then through other networks and associations. We welcome anyone with a road bike who wish to ride as a group and share in the camaraderie of team cycling. We have low to high end bikes ; moderate to fast riders; half ironmen and newbie riders. But we ride it like we mean it!

When being a Pro is just not enough

The cool morning breeze permeates the bedroom ever so lightly. The skies are turning a copper gold and the sun just peeking out over the horizon into the clouds. Suddenly the distorted noise turns into what we recognise as music. The radio awakes the less than well rested body coupled with repeated snoozes of the cellphone alarm clock. Annoying but necessary are these 'wake-me-ups' for the ride which is to follow.

Every Saturday morning in my life is met with a memorable thought of getting up early and looking at the clock and reminiscing of the days when I used to ride it like I meant it (Well, at least to our rendezvous point - simply because I was always oversleeping and running late).

I couldn't explain the tiredness which I endured carried forward from the day before - thanks to working late. I do sometimes wish that I had that little extra push in each pedal stroke that I made when it was time to ride with the guys of Cyclospore. Mind you, being a 28year old.. or young (if you want) avid cyclist doesn't qualify you as a "fit" fella in Cyclospore, which consisted of really fine and fit chaps with an age band as wide as the Grand Canyon... but oh my these guys can make you think twice to ask yourself if the thousand dollar machine you invested in was indeed a sound decision!

Drugs and sports are notorious and have always had a part to play at even the highest level of sporting glory. They somehow seem to come together very well back in those days.

These days, it's still rife and very much present, albeit in a more sophisticated and structured way. Cycling is not spared and doping has done more damage to the sport than good. It's almost like saying once you've added too much salt to the dish, you cannot save it no matter how much you try. Well it also raises the question of how prominent a figure you are in cycling, so much so that the more of the limelight you see, more people tend to take notice.

Cycling has become more popular over the years internationally and it's no different in Singapore as more people pursue an active and healthy lifestyle and coincidentally it happens to be that cycling is one of the most commonly accessible sport. As many learnt to ride a bicycle in their childhood. Well let's not go there but just ponder on the thought of if people here in Singapore have even heard of doping scandals in cycling. Im sure that many have read in the media but try asking a weekend warrior and chances are, he/she will tell you - HUH?

What Im driving at is the fact that we all have our times when we constantly wish greedily for that little advantage over our fellow team mates within our little factions. This cant be helped as it's the nature of which we and the soceity we live in.

TOUR DE BINTAN 2012

FIVE INTREPID MEMBERS FROM TEAM CYCLOSPORE made the Ferry Trip from Tanah Merah to Bintan on 9th Nov   to 11th Nov  2012 for the annual event. This year's edition saw about 900 cyclists from 30 plus countries coursing thru the lovely terrain of Bintan Island.

Winston (our Pinarello stalwart)  took part in all three stages (273 km!) under the competitive category whilst the rest of us  mere mortals opted to do the GranFondo for the third stage only - 82 km of flats, downslopes and climbs! - for our maiden TDB.

The beautful thing about the event was the feeling that the whole island was in on it with the locals cheering the riders on almost every turn and sideline as we passed thru  towns and villages and anywhere with a kampong house or school. The vistas afforded were scenic with rolling hills, pristine beaches, ample road space with nary a pot hole; and clear directions from a whole army of volunteers flagging each turn, stopping traffic for the pelotons and even the sole rider passing thru that junction,  supportcrew with replacement wheels affixed on teh back of their trsuty m/cycles, fully stocked water/isotonic stops  (with bananas and delectable kueh lapis - and TDB logo bottles we cld keep!) en route , value for money pre and post race massages etc. Very well organised! Its a tropical version of the TDF! Will do it again next year once my quads recover LOL!!

Thanks to the great pple at Restaurant KAMPOENG NELAYAN (A shout out to Riyanto Tan here! Did u get your bike from  TOGOPARTS yet?) who fed us fried rice on all three days (yup - so gd we went back each time to ta pau!); the masseuses under the charge of Michelle Phan @ BINTAN NATURAL SPA where we had pre race aromatherapy bliss of 120 minutes smelling variously like coffee, lemon grass and  rosemary (and post race reflexology as well where our shaved smooth  cyclist calves were a  rare delight  that the masseuses beheld with 'lagi kuat' effleurage pressure!)

Last of all, thanks to the MAGNUM  (only 13000 rupiah! Cheap!! ) ice creams we slurped up   on all three days we were there in a  convenient justification process of pre and post race carbo load/recovery makan:)

RIDE IT LIKE U MEAN IT GUYS!! :)

TEAM CYCLOSPORE FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY 2012

Has it been a year already? Yup - we started the group born out of Togoparts postings over a year ago actually, and the group has grown into a close knit band of like minded roadies who ride together. From the first 'official' group ride to NEO TIEW , Saturday mornings have been the preserve and domain of our friendly fun rides that has brought us further afield to Changi ,Pasir Ris, Orchard Road , West Coast Road, Mount Faber and of course our own 'backyard' areas of Mandai, Seletar, Punggol and Sengkang.
We had a group road trip to Malaysia's Desaru last year with the Law Society of Spore; we shld see some members partake of the Tour De Bintan in Nov 2012; and we had the timely opportunity to do a team ride for the 2012 edition of the OCBC Cycle donning sponsored jerseys. A nice eventful first year!

The Ride of Silence  this year in May was cancelled; but a few of us stilled donned sombre black/white colours and did a 'silent ' route as a mark of remembrance and observance of the movement.

Over to our anniversary, we will be doing Time Trials over a set distance and measure off our PB timings. Come  one Sat morning in July, we will do a pursuit race (where the cyclsists are handicapped by their earlier posted PB timings and will start off in sequence of slowest rider first . So the fastest rider rides off last and the finish will be a combined finish line that has taken into consideration the handicapped speeds!)  Sounds good?

Prizes are being planned (with Les Amis vouchers, CRC premiums etc) and we shld round off teh festivities with a BBQ at Springhill. We shall discuss this more in detail over the next few rides to get buy in and ideas :)

Ride safe; and RIDE it like YOU MEAN it!!

CYCLOSPORE ODE TO STUDIO SPONSOR SHOOT (1st session 2012)

Thanks to the intrepid members who turned up at NORTHSTAR to partake of the ODE TO STUDIO sponsored shoot for the team. This time round was special as we had our specially designed Team Cyclospore wear to don and show off for digital posterity. Pity that the morning rain that started since wee hours didnt let up at all and from what I had expected to be a big group turn out with a nice ride planned to Punggol and Sengkang be4 rv-ing at Northstar, quite a few members ended up offering apologies for not being able to make it. Oh well!

Wet roads and persistent rain not withstanding, the few of us that braved the puddles and arrived variously by cars (Andy n yours truly, and Clems), bus/taxi ( Jeff, who had to rush off to work thereafter), motor bike (Victor - who rode in full team regalia on his trusty scooter to the photoshoot) and taxi (c/w with bike in boot - Dan - who dutifully rushed all the waydown from Jurong and then home again to get his gear and...his bike!) - had a swell time getting to look pro in our sponsored shoot.

Darren the affable photographer managed to coax out of our stiff poses some really fine shots and with our team gear - methinks we look rather spiffy! We presented a token jersey to the ODE pple and look fwd to the next shoot where we can get more of our guys in ! ODE has also put two of our pics up in their website as their 'clients' :)

Stay tuned for the rest of the pics! Once again, thanks to ODE TO STUDIO for making us look good, to UNIMAX CREATIVES ( my gd clients and friends Andy & Agnes Tan) for coming up with the moolah to part bankroll our team wear ; and KAI MEDICAL CLINIC (Dr Tan) for sponsoring our nutrition n sustenance and photographer when he can find time.

Zoological Gardens & Waterfront "Chillax" Ride

The leaves were rustling in the soft Saturday breeze just at the break of morning. Overcast skies looming on the horizon.

The occasional lorry zooms past on the nearby motorway. And the sun finally takes a peek... out of the blue yonder greeting me ever so gently as it reflects off the window sill.

I reluctantly get out of bed feeling happy somehow that Im going to be rewarded to a great ride afterwards.

It was one of the most "unorganized" Saturday morning's in Cyclospore history I must say. Everyone was in some sort of fuzzy state. Late to awake and miscommunicated ride details. First to arrive was Gabriel (absent for 2 weeks) and next was me and Rocket Rupert. Reuben followed shortly with Daniel sleepily rolling in and Ming Wei arriving soon too.

The traditional exchange of handshakes were seen to and we chatted amongst ourselves with Reuben and me keeping quiet. (Wondering how come these guys have so much to chat about I guess?)

Bukit Brown was on the itenerary initially but majority decided against it as most wanted a Chill and Relax ride! (Hence the new term coined - Chillax) heheh!

We decided to head on down to the world famous Zoological Gardens off Mandai Road and then made it our stopover for a cuppa and toast (add in Chee Cheong Fun, Congee and Butter with Half Boiled eggs)

To our surprise, the Zoo was abuzz with tourists and locals alike. Perhaps due to the fact that the day before was a Public Holiday. Tourists a plenty too! We were not the only cyclists as there were other factions gracing the many food outlets in the vicinity.

Cyclospore decided after much hesitation to stack our bikes to be a little more considerate to other fellow cyclists.

We enjoyed exchanging jokes and bantering and lapped up indulgently the offerings of an Orang Utan run eatery.

Soon, time caught up and it was getting super crowded. We decided to push off... but to where? Should we go here? Or there? Or you know, maybe there would be good...

I suggested Waterfront after some thought as I thought that it was a good and nice place to go which won't be too crowded at this time and also some guys have not been there. Anyway it was just a stone's throw away.

So off we went-a-pedalling slowly at a snails pace. Bikes were complaining to the owners and all as we under pedaled them... but, heck! We are not in a race-leh! So just cycle and enjoy the surroundings.

That we did and we were going to be faced with a steep 5% incline near Kranji MRT and I sped up and told Gabs that he had to make a choice as to whether he was game for the rather steep climb or he preferred mainly flats.

Gabs hesitated a little and then shuffled between climb and then choose no climb. In the end we took the no climb option with me pulling the group (cannot use peloton as the group not big enough). We were soon at the entrance of the legendary Woodlands Checkpoint (spelt as always jam). There was small talk and some joked at the traffic lights while waiting for the lights to turn that whether anyone brought along their passports! .... we then made our way around the old Woodlands Bus Interchange.

I decided to take a more adventurous route and it involved dismounting our bikes and pushing our bikes up a ramp which lead to a park connector. And that we did to everyone's SURPRISE! haha! Caught them off guard there!

But there were smiles on everyones faces as Dan waited for Gabs who was a little behind on the slope.

We could soon see in the distance the massive gridlock build up for vehicles heading in to Singapore. What a sight. It was then a downhill experience which saw speeds in excess of 100km/h minus 80km/h. :-P

Riding along the coastline where Johor was on the horizon, well not actually on the horizon but just opposite from where we are. Surprising how near it seems but yet so far when we have to make our way across with immigration clearance and all.

Well, that's not what we're doing here today, as we continued and made haste to soldier on to the entrance of the sprawling Woodlands Waterfront as Rocket wanted to conduct big business of sorts.

We waited in the shade patiently and took pics of the bikes lined up and I even had the honor to test ride the bike which Omega Pharma Quickstep ride currently and Mark Cavendish rode last year! - The Venerable S-Works Venge. Super Supple Ride with lots of potent character and fiery speed waiting to be unleashed upon command. Powered by none other than the pro-tour proven Big-S Dura Ace.

As

Rocket Rupert emerged looking relieved, we rolled on to the jetty and went to the end of it. Rupert's Bar end cap decided to take a salty refreshing dive into the sea as it has not seen a lot of water lately or so it whispered to me! kekeke!

And so that was the adventurous and thrilling story of a post Good Friday ride which all of us enjoyed. We parted at the lights. Big smiles on everyones faces.

I accompanied Ming Wei half way back and Rupert, Reuben, Gabs and Dan headed the opposite direction with Dan clocking in more miles by following Gabs to Thompson and back.

That's how the story of a rather "unorganized" Cyclospore day out unfolded. Hopefully we will have more of these to come as it seems that every ride it gets better and we always have some exciting stuff going on for us!

So if you (anybody at all!) are reading this, please do join us on our Chillax rides as we welcome everyone to share and partake in the camaraderie that the joy of cycling has to offer! Saturdays at Sembawang Shopping Centre - 730am will be our Rendezvous point.... and Secret Training rides are organized "secretly" albeit not so secretly too if you get what I mean.

Happy Easter one and all! :-)

Ride Safe,

Matt

CYCLOSPORE @ MARINA BAY SAIL

The wind shadows created by skyscrapers and wind shifts in the Bay proved challenging!
The second trip saw us taking out the spinnaker as well!
Sailing a steady close haul in a fresh breeze....ALL SMILES :)
Destination? LV island ahead!!
We had two days' sailing trials with the new sailboats that are berthed in Marina Bay [as part of the Marina Bay sailing project initiative) and I invited 5 members from Team Cyclospore and one of our kind sponsors out for a once in a life time sail right in the bay with the iconic MBSands, Merlion, Esplanade etc as fitting backdrop to the glittering jewel of Marina Bay.

Here are just a few shots of the SB3 doing its thing crewed by our Team members. What's next? Special team selection from our cyclists for the sailing match racing league that will follow! just another initiative to get our guys to experience and appreciate the intricate sport of sailing :)

My OCBC 2012 Experience

OK! Here you are...

I had a puncture on the 1st turn after the start line. I heard a hissing like noise coming from the back and I thought how come I had a leaf or some kind of paper stuck in my frame?

So I choose to stop at the very first turn and Gab and How followed suit.

Thanks to this 2 fabulous bros for accompanying me for quite a while. In fact How pointed out to me that my chain was making a noise of sorts but it turned out when I stopped I saw to my horror a huge staple stuck in my beloved tyre! When I stopped, I could hear the hissing was constant and I immediately knew that air was escaping and I was so sad.

How pulled out a tube and It was a sigh of relieve. Next we tried to figure out a way to unmount the tire from the rim without any tire levers. I made do with a heavy heart using the rear skewer as it was tapered on one end. It did the trick very well surprisingly and I was still happy that I could change the tube.

The happiness was short-lived as I did not remember that I was using a deep section wheel and hence needed a tube with a long valve to make to make up for the deep section of the aero-foil. So no choice, I told Gab and How to push and soldier on without me. Thank you once again Gab and How! You guys are champions!

Marshalls were useless as they could not even tell me what or where to go for a replacement. One of them then called I guess their leader and then I was told to go back to the start line to get the tube replaced. So I walked back to the start line with a heavy heart.

I had to line up as there were some other people waiting to get their bikes tuned and tubes changed as well for the 20km race due to start in half an hours time.

I knew about the cut off time for the 39km ride and that it was at 8pm that they will close off a section of the route.

The Shimano neutral service did not have my tube and had to improvise by using a borrowed valve extender to pump up my tire and then remove it again. I paid $10 for good service with a nice guy changing my tire and a smile on his face as he called for the next person in line.

I then heard the announcement for the riders taking part in the 20km community ride to make their way as they had only 10mins left to the start. I thought to myself, gosh! I better make it to the same place where I left off before I get caught in a sea of riders. Not a nice thing. So I had to walk to the entrance of the carnival and then worm my way in and out of crowds of people coming in and Im trying to get out. 5 mins gone there!

By the time I reached the place where I had a puncture, an official stopped me and I begged him to let me through as I wanted to carry on and the 2 marshals confirmed that I was indeed there earlier on with a puncture.

So the official was kind enough to let me through although he suggested that I wait for the 20km guys to start and move off together with them. He then told me that if I don't mind the route has gone "live" meaning to say that it has been opened to public and some sections are not fully closed anymore so I had to ride at my own risk.

I took the risk and went on and I powered on through the MBS area flying though over the slippery terrain of metal covers and holes here and there. Not to mention the hoards of foreign workers crossing the roads. Once on the Nicoll highway stretch I could see in a distance the back markers and I powered on from a constant 30kmh plus speed to about 54kmh all the way through ECP and managed at some stretches 60kmh plus speeds. Afterwhich I had to do 30kmh and below once inside ECP park vicinity. A little daunting at first as I had to keep slowing down then powering up to get pass the slow ones. It was really energy sapping and I had also at one point before the hydration point drafted an ambulance for about a good 2km reaching speeds in excess of 40km plus. Then came the climb at Benjamin Shears bridge where I had to make my way through a maze of cyclist. It was so tight and at some point I almost had to unclip and walk as the guy in front of me suddenly got down. I hopped onto the cemented part of the shoulder and continued powering up and then back on to tarmac and picked up the pace upslope again.

After that, I was so happy to see the downslope and I managed to clock 73kmh according to my speedo as I cranked up the gears with the big chainring and the smallest cog at the back. Thank you TREK and SRAM! What a lethal combo! The bike was amazingly swift with superb handling and I did not feel for any moment that the bike was unstable at all. I knew what TREK did was worth it in all the research they put in. The drivetrain did not fail me too.

I literally whacked the bike over the ECP stretch over rough surfaces and pushed it over the humps and speed strips too! So comfortable. I only have sore hamstrings as I believe I pushed too hard!

I finished the "race" in 1:54... minus a couple of mins and I think Im satisfied with my performance this year.

The puncture made me achieve something I could not achieve if I rode with the pack.

For all I can remember I was always overtaking people and no one passed me at all. Not bragging but just sharing my experiences la!

All in all I would like to thank Gabriel and How! A big heartfelt Thank YOU! Bros! And thank you to Team Cyclospore! A good fruitful outing indeed!

Ride safe!

Matt

TEAM CYCLOSPORE at OCBC CYCLE 2012

The MUCH awaited day on 4th March 2012 dawned dark and drizzling. It was a veritable exercise in logistics where 13 team members had to make their way down in 6 cars to the F1 pit staging area of the OCBC Cycle event. Woke up 3 am. We had to get there early enuf for Arv, Cheryl and Dan to start their 59km super challenge. The rest of us were up for the 39 km challenge which only flagged off at 6.30 am.

We had our team CYCLOSPORE jerseys ready - Arv only having got his at the driveway outside my house in the wee hours and donned it there and then. We had Arv, Cheryl, Gabs, Winst, Jay,Clem, Vic,How, Matt,Reuben, Dan, Andy and yours truly in this gp outing.

We didnt get to see everyone at the start there, but we maintained phone contact and agreed to meet post event at a certain meetg point for gp pics and makan post event. With us was Dr Cliff Tan, who was one of our sponsors. He would be taking pics of us in action...:) The post drizzle weather was cool and the route ahead looked promising!

The flag off was done in several waves, with a route up Bayfront Ave Bridge through the underpass near Marina Bay. The 5 of us were in the same wave under gp D. (Matt, How, Gabs, Reuben and me) . Winst, Clem, Jay and Vic were in the first wave of the 39 km challenge, having made their way to the front much earlier. Andy was on his own in gp B, and he hadto filter off to a separate start fr us. It was strange riding thru red traffic lights. - but hey the road was all ours!!

After the underpass, the route took us past the construction sites at the Marina South area. It was rather slippery at this point and roads were not fully asphalted - with metal plates bridging whatever lies beneath, and everyone was cautioned to slow down with cyclists dutifully repeating back. I think it was at this point poor Matthew suffered a puncture. Gab and How who was nearest him stopped to help him change tyre but as it turned out the tube cldnt fit and Matt had to return all the way back to the start to get a replacement tube. Matt - pl share your story that turned into a 73kmh top speed challenge ride for you!!)

The iconic Benjamin Sheares bridge loomed up next for me and the youngest member, Reuben (at 16 years) who was riding by my side all this while. The ride up was easy - we were fresh and raring to go, tho' I kept looking behind to see where the rest were. But Reuben and I nevertheless went on, thinking that the rest wld catch up sooner or later. After the crest, the descent down was really superfast. I wasnt used to that kind of 50kmh speed and braked to slow down the carbon speed machine I was on. Reuben did the same - we scaredy cats were the same ones who also braked going downslopes at the training rides we did at Upper Pierce the week before! LOL!!

The whole ECP stretch leading up to Tanah Merah was entirely closed for the OCBC ride. This made for VERY WIDE, super smooth flat course tarmac to literallly tear down with no stops or braeks save for negotiating past slower cyclists and giving way to overtakers- we were happily crusing at 35 kmh here - not pushing too hard, and frequently looking back to see where the rest were who started in our wave. Reuben was grinning ear to ear - " shiok, right? " I shouted across to him. He grinned wider....

Till about the 20km, it was a beautiful ride with the dawning morn and rain scented air. We started to overtake the mtbs and foldies tho' some were still charging at full speed. We overtook quite a number of earlier start gps as well. It was quite orderly save for a few chargers who whizzed past us on left and right , some shouting to get right of way as overtakers. I made it a point not to ride on the right side as that side had a lot of whizzer-pasters. I really didnt fancy a high speed crash at 30 kmh!

Near the U-turn point at the 20 km mark, we slowed down as the gp ahead slowed as well - to avoid a horrible sight of a bloodied cyclist lying on the left, bloodied face and all - I shuddered at the sight and averted my gaze to gingerly cycle safely past the bottleneck. I whsipered a prayer for the hapless victim and also wondered where the ambulance was. After the U-turn, it was a ride down the ECP service road. This narrower stretch featured speed limiting strips that rattled our bikes, numerous humps that cautioned our speed and corners which dictated a slower pace for safety's sake as it was also gettg kinda crowded. We decided to skip the first rest point, having had sufficient drinks on the go (which we sipped from our bottles whilst on the move - a manoeuvre i am still as yet not too chai at!). Matt whizzed by on the ECP on the opposite side and shouted my name - ok - he was fine......and prob catching up on his speed machine.

My phone rang and I didnt answer it. As I found out later, it was fr Clem who also suffered a flat but was pumping it up at each of the two rest stops so that he cld soldier on. That's the spirit!!

We rode past the second rest point as well, after all - its close to finish and hey - we were not tired tho my lower back was aching n my neck too. In fact my left leg was numb (since Parkway Parade on the ECP)- which I knew to be the tell tale sign of my prolapsed disc impinging on my sciatic nerve...... but it was still mangeable so on on on the pedals go. Strangely, my legs were still fresh!

Fresh enuf to climb up Benjamin Sheares bridge without abatement. Iwas surprised to see pple walking and pushing their bkes along...hmm....(I was also so tempted by the PO - photo op of taking a shot of my ride agst the skyline of S'pura but no..no..no!) I think I lost young Reuben there as I went on....maintaining my momentum..... up the return leg on the bridge and sweeping down the Rochor ramp - this time again chickening out to brake brake brake cos I am really kinda fearful of the 50kmh speed whizzing down...I had memories of my own Subaru Impreza skidding at this same stretch almost two decades ago which had me ending up in a 180 degree turn...with nary a scratch on the car body - I wasnt about to relive that on my bike which had no ABS!! After that , it was an easy ride past pom pom wielding OCBC girlie cohorts and the Suntec Fountain and to the finish line at F1 Pit Building!

For a first outing, I didnt want to push it, and it was a relatively relaxing ride at 1.21 hrs as my net timing. Yippees!! Av speed - 29.62 kmh. Not bad :)
